What determines commercial electric rates?
Your service address, distribution utility, annual kilowatt-hour usage, peak demand, operating schedule and contract start date can affect available supply offers. A restaurant with refrigeration, an office with daytime occupancy and a manufacturer running multiple shifts can have different electricity purchasing needs.
Have these details ready
- Your business name and service address, including ZIP code.
- A recent electric bill showing your utility and rate class.
- Electricity usage history and demand information, where available.
- Your current supply agreement, renewal date and any termination terms.
- A contact who can answer questions about the business account.
The rate request form will identify the information needed for your inquiry. Provide sensitive account details only through the intended form and review its terms and privacy information.

Compare the complete offer
Look beyond a headline price per kilowatt-hour. Check contract length, fixed or variable pricing, included and excluded charges, usage requirements, renewable energy terms, early termination charges and what happens when the agreement expires. Utility delivery charges, taxes and other applicable charges may remain separate from the supplier price.
Check eligibility at your service address
Electricity choice depends on your state, utility territory and account. Some municipal and cooperative customers cannot select a competitive supplier. Michigan has participation limits, Oregon uses direct access rules for eligible business customers, and Virginia has limited eligibility. A city name alone does not establish whether an account can switch suppliers.
Your distribution utility continues to maintain the local wires and handle outages where competitive supply is available. A supply change does not by itself improve outage restoration or change delivery reliability. Savings and supplier availability are not guaranteed.
